Starting Over at 59: My Journey Beyond the Scale

A tranquil beach with gentle waves lapping at the shore as people stroll along the sandy coastline under an overcast sky.

At 59, I’ve learned that starting over doesn’t mean starting from nothing. I’m bringing years of life experience, lessons, setbacks, and determination with me. Beyond the Scale and Growing is where I’m sharing my real-life journey with weight loss, Mounjaro, food, wellness, and the changes that come with deciding to put myself back on the list.

Where My Journey Really Began

About a year ago, my health reached a breaking point. I was living with obesity, dealing with chronic daily fatigue, and my A1C had reached 8.4. I knew if Ii wanted to feel better, be there for my family, and reclaim my life, something had to change.

With my doctor’s help, I decided to start Mounjaro. As part of the approval process, my insurance wanted me to complete a sleep study. I expected it to be just another step to get my medication approved, but the results revealed a serious sleep problem I didn’t realize I had.

The sleep study was a wake-up call. I learned that I had stopped breathing many times throughout the night, which helped explain why I was so exhausted during the day. Suddenly, my health journey wasn’t only about weight loss. I was also learning how important good sleep was, and a CPAP machine became part of my new routine.

Why I Started This Blog

I’ve made real progress since this journey began. I’m 34 pounds down, and my A1C has gone from 8.4 to 5.0. My doctor says that my diabetes is well controlled. I also have more energy, and I can get through a full workday without feeling like I’m going to doze off at my desk.

But I’m not at the finish line yet. The internet is full of polished “before and after” pictures, but we don’t always see the messy, honest middle. That is the part I want to share: the good days, the setbacks, the side effects, the insurance frustrations, the small victories, and everything I’m learning along the way.

Beyond the Scale and Growing is about more than weight loss. It’s about health, food, wellness, getting older, learning to take better care of myself, and figuring out what comes next. If sharing my experience helps someone else feel a little less alone in their own journey, then this blog is doing what I hoped it would do.
